A hazy chaotic scene of two dancers dressed in ripped nylon and dough, writhing and screaming as a referee looks on.

Kayfabing the never visible

When our identities get separated from us and start to run loose, we have no control over how anything is perceived. Inside a wrestling-ring-cum-ouija-board, somewhere outside of reality, misbehaving identities fight age-old battles of good and evil without any moral compass. Kayfabing is a manic ritual that challenges the idea of a theatre show. Taking place within a make-shift ring we play out a series of nonsensical set-pieces including the capturing of an internalised heteronormative identity, a spirit world text-generating dance competition, and the hokie-kokie. The show has included many classic moments, Dani Dinger’s mournful rendition of Anyone can fall in love performed as “The Ref”, Marlen Pflueger and Willa Faulkner introduced their alien dance duet with The Forehead Song, and we introduced the world to the tragic effigy of James. Probably the most surreal of the Robyn & Margaret shows, Kayfabing is funny, confusing, intimidating and enlightening.
