Cabaret as Queer Rite
Since 2017 I have been writing and performing shows with Robyn Herfellow that playfully explore many aspects of queer identity through a kind of cabaret ritual. The project was started to roughly generate ideas to refine in situ, but with the help of some talented musicians, dancers and queer performers the shows manically barrelled on through the pandemic, becoming an infrequent yet popular event in East London.
I am slowly unpacking many of the elements into other work, such as the politics of gender and class personified by The Angry Chicken and her anarchistic eggs, telling the tragicomedy of historical queer lives using puppets, and the many other songs and characters that explore death, hair, narcissism, digestion, cleanliness and love.
