The joy and intensity of dance lends itself to loose and expressive drawing. Having worked with dancers for several years, as solos, duets and group performances, I have been greatly inspired by the process these artists go through. ‘Thinking as a body’, and the expression that results from this, influences an approach to drawing where the physical body, in recognisable and abstracted forms, is given agency, and a relational space is opened up on the page. Working without a model means anatomy becomes an exploration of line, scratching away until something is revealed that is believable and dynamic. Generating two bodies opens a potential for joy and intimacy.
